This is one of the world's most popular instability braces, used by professional athletes as well as weekend warriors. It is designed to treat people
with moderate ACL, PCL, MCL,
and LCL instabilities.
It is also rugged enough that it can be used in contact sports.
Indeed, this is the brace Jerome Bettis ("The Bus") of
the Pittsburgh Steelers wore when he ruptured his MCL!
The Playmaker is manufactured by DonJoy,
who is one of the leading sports knee brace manufacturers in the
world (they are now called "djortho") and an official
supplier of the U.S. ski team. DonJoy lists this brace as their
"Enhanced Drytex Playmaker® Wraparound - no popliteal cutout".
When you're shopping around, make sure you are comparing apples
to apples - this is the enhanced version of the Playmaker,
not the older version; it only comes in Black.
Wraparound
Enhanced Playmaker Features:
- Patented 4-point dynamic leverage system controls all major
knee instabilities.
- Low profile
- Polycentric hinge with contoured condyle shells
- Wraparound design makes it easy to contour all leg/thigh shapes
and sizes.
- Specifically designed for use in all types of sports activities.
- Drytex fabric is very durable and more breathable than neoprene
(which most other braces - including the "old" Playmaker
- are made of). There is also less chance for allergic reactions
to the fabric, which has been known to occur with neoprene.
What
the Playmaker will do for you:
This brace is designed to give your knee
stability in many directions (front/back and side-to-side).
It supports
your ligaments to allow them to heal if they have been
injured (such as with an MCL
tear). It provides long-term support for ligaments that have been
torn and not reconstructed (such as an ACL).
If you have had surgery and
want some extra support when you return
to sports, this is the brace for you.
Frequently
asked questions about the Playmaker:
- Why shouldn't
I just get a custom-ACL brace? Custom
ACL braces can cost more than $1000
- and many insurance companies (if not most) will not pay for
them! If you have a severe ACL deficiency, you may want to talk
to your doctor about a custom brace, or better yet, talk to him/her
about an ACL reconstruction.
However, for most other levels of instability, the Playmaker offers
real-life,
proven stability for high level sports. And, at JointHealing.Com,
we are able to offer this brace at a phenomenal price so that
everyone can benefit from it, not just the elite athlete.
- Who
should use this brace? This brace is designed for
use by active people who require a stable knee. Even people who
have had an ACL reconstruction and want to return to high level
sports can benefit from the extra feeling of stability and security
the Playmaker will give them.
Which sports
can the Playmaker be used in? You
should always check with your doctor before returning to sports
after a knee injury. In addition, you should check with your league
to make sure that a brace with hinges is legal in that sport.
The Playmaker has been used in the following sports (to name just
a few):
- Football
- Soccer
- Skiing
- Motocross
- Basketball
- Tennis/racquetball
Why
shouldn't I just buy the Drytex Economy
Hinged Knee Brace instead? That
certainly is an option, especially if you are not going to be
very active in sports. However, the Playmaker is specifically
designed for people with anterior-posterior instability (eg. ACL
or PCL tears). And, it is designed for heavy-duty contact sports,
whereas the hinged knee brace is more useful for less aggressive
sports. If your ACL has been reconstructed, the economy hinged
brace may work for you; however, if your ACL is still torn (never
had surgery) or your reconstruction is a little loose, this brace
is a much better option.
